What is love in the Bible?
Most people think of love as a feeling of attraction and affection for someone (or something), which creates a sense of well-being but also a sense of care and commitment.
God’s idea of love is much deeper. God’s love for us, and His expectation of our love for Him and others, includes self-sacrifice.
After all, He loved us so much He gave His only Son! God’s love includes more than emotions – it includes putting aside one’s own needs or comfort for the benefit of another.
Love isn’t always reciprocal. God loves even those who don’t love Him: “While we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son.” (Romans 5:10) He expects us to do the same: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” (Luke 6:27-28)

Types of love in the Bible
Eros love
The Bible talks about various types of love, including eros or romantic, sexual love. Although the Bible doesn’t actually use this word, the Song of Solomon celebrates sexual intimacy, and we see it in the love of Isaac for Rebekah (Genesis 26:8) and Jacob for Rachel (Genesis 29:10-11, 18, 20, 30).
Storge love
Storge love is family love. Perhaps no love is more intense than the love of a mother or father for their child, and this is the love God has for us! “Can a woman forget her nursing child and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49:15)
Philos love
Romans 12:10 says, “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor.” The word translated “devoted” is philostorgos, combining storge with philos or friendship love. A philos friend is that person you can wake up in the middle of the night when you’re in a bit of an emergency. (Luke 11:5-8) Our love for other believers is a combination of family love and best friend love (and also agape love, which we’ll get to next): people we prefer to be with, share interests with, can depend on, and trust as confidants.
Wonderful news! We are friends of Jesus! We share this kind of love with Him. In John 15:15, Jesus spoke of the disciples as moving from a servant-master relationship to a philos friend relationship, where they (and now we) are partnering with Jesus in His revealed plan to go and bear fruit for His kingdom.
Agape love
A fourth type of love in the Bible is agape love, which is described in 1 Corinthians 13. This is the love of God for us, of God for Christ, of us toward God and toward other believers. We are friends with God and with other believers, but we also have this different level of love. It is a love from soul to soul, flamed into fire by the Holy Spirit. Agape love is pure and selfless; it is a choice of the will, desiring and striving for the best for the one loved, and expecting nothing in return.
The New Testament uses agape love over 200 times. When God commands us to love Him with all our heart, soul and mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves, He uses the word agape. When God describes the characteristics of love in 1 Corinthians 13, He uses the word agape.
Agape love is patient and kind. It isn’t jealous, it doesn’t demand attention, it’s not arrogant, dishonorable, self-seeking, easily provoked, and doesn’t hold grudges. It doesn’t delight in being hurtful but rejoices in sincerity. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Agape love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13).

Definition for love in the Bible
What is God’s love? God’s love is unwavering and unfailing and unconditional, even when our love for Him may grow cold. God’s love is seen in the beauty of the gospel of Christ for unbelievers. God’s love is so intense, there’s nothing He won’t do to restore relationship with us – even sacrifice His own Son.
No matter what you are struggling with, no matter how broken you are, no matter how deep into sin you have sunk, God loves you with a mind-blowing, incomprehensible, love. God is for you! Through His love, you can overwhelmingly conquer[KB1] whatever is keeping you down. Nothing can separate you from God’s love. Nothing! (Romans 8:31-39)
God is wholly love. His nature is love. His love surpasses our human knowledge, and yet, through His Spirit, and when Christ dwells in our hearts through faith, and when we’re rooted and grounded in love, we can begin to comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth of His love. And when we know His love, we can be filled up to all the fullness of God! (Ephesians 3:16-19)

Characteristics of love in the Bible
Aside from the characteristics of love previously mentioned from 1 Corinthians 13, other characteristics include:
- There is no fear in love; perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18)
- We can’t love the world and the Father at the same time (1 John 2:15)
- We can’t love God and hate a brother or sister at the same time (1 John 4:20)
- Love does no harm to a neighbor (Romans 13:10)
- When we walk in love, we give ourselves up, as Christ did (Ephesians 5:2, 25)
- Love nourishes and cherishes the one loved (Ephesians 5:29-30)
- Love isn’t just words – it is actions – actions of self-sacrifice and care for those in need (1 John 3:16-18)

Psalms of love
The intimate love of God is revealed in Psalm 139, which reminds us we are known by God, and we are loved by Him. “You have searched me and known me . . . You understand my thoughts . . . and are intimately acquainted with all my ways . . . You have enclosed me behind and before, and laid Your hand on me . . . You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb . . . How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!”
In Psalm 143, David the psalmist is praying for deliverance and guidance. His spirit is overwhelmed, and he feels crushed and persecuted by the enemy. But then he stretches out his hands to God, perhaps like a small child stretching his hands to be picked up by his parent. His soul longs for God, like one thirsting for water in a parched land. “Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning!”
Psalm 85, written by the sons of Korah, begs for God to restore and revive His people. “Show us Your lovingkindness, O Lord.” And then, rejoicing in God’s answer – God’s kiss of restoration: “Lovingkindness and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.”
Psalm 18 begins, “I love You, O Lord, my strength.” This is David’s love song to his rock, his fortress, his deliverer. When David called out to God for help, God came thundering to David’s rescue, with smoke coming out of His nostrils. “He rescued me, because He delighted in me.” God delights in us when we return the great love He has for us!
37. Psalm 139:1-3 “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.”

What is the link between love and obedience?
All God’s commands are summed up in loving God with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength, and loving our neighbor as ourselves. (Mark 12:30-31)
The book of 1 John deals poignantly with the relationship between love (of God and others) and obedience.
47. “Whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected.” (1 John 2:5)
48. “By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.” (1 John 3:10)

Scriptures for love and marriage
Several times in Scripture, instructions are given to married couples and what their relationship should look like.
Husbands are told to love their wives and given specific examples of how to love them:
- “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” (Ephesians 5:25)
- “Husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies.” (Ephesians 5:28)
- “Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh against them.” (Colossians 3:19)
Likewise, the older women were to “encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.” (Titus 2:4-5)
Marriage between a Christian man and woman is meant to be a portrait of the marriage of Christ and the church. Truly a picture is worth a thousand words! If you are married, what do people see when they look at the relationship between you and your spouse? Joy in marriage comes when we sacrifice our own pleasure for what brings pleasure to our spouse. And guess what? Their pleasure brings us pleasure as well.
When one sacrifices themselves for their spouse, it doesn’t mean a loss of identity. It doesn’t mean giving up one’s own desires and dreams. What it means is giving up selfishness, giving up considering oneself as “number one.” Jesus didn’t give up His identity for the church, but He sublimated it, for a time. He humbled Himself to lift us up! But in the end, both Christ and the church are glorified! (Revelation 19:1-9)

Beautiful wedding Bible verses about love
Ephesians 4:2-3 gives a picture of what a loving marriage relationship based on Christ should look like: “ . . . with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Going back to the beginning and studying the creation of man and woman in Genesis gives us a picture of why and how God instituted the covenant of marriage:
- “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27) Both man and woman were created in God’s image. They were created to be a unit, and, in their oneness, to reflect the triune God in His oneness.
- “Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.’” (Genesis 2:18) Adam was not complete within himself. He needed someone comparable to him to complete him. Just as the Trinity is three Persons in One, each working separately yet together, so is marriage meant to be the merging of two distinct people into one unit.
Song of Solomon 8:6-7 describes the unquenchable, fierce strength of marital love:

God’s command to love one another
As noted earlier, God’s second greatest command is loving others as we love ourselves. (Mark 12:31) And if that other person is unlovable – even hateful, we’ve still got to love him or her. We’re to even love and pray for our enemies. How do we do that? God enables us to love others – even that person that has hurt you, that person who has done you wrong. With the Holy Spirit’s power, we can respond even to open hostility with a smile and with kindness. We can pray for that person.

What does the Bible say about love and forgiveness?
Proverbs 17:9 says, “Whoever conceals an offense promotes love, but he who brings it up separates friends.” Another word for “conceal” can be “cover” or “forgive.” When we forgive those who have offended us, we’re prospering love. If we don’t forgive, but instead keep bringing the offense up and harping on it, this behavior can come between friends.
We cannot expect God to forgive us if we don’t forgive others who have hurt us. (Matthew 6:14-15; Mark 11:25)

Jonathan, son of King Saul, and heir to his throne, befriended David just after he killed Goliath, and was standing in front of Saul with the giant’s head in his hands. “The soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as himself . . . Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, including his sword and his bow and his belt.” (1 Samuel 18:1, 3-4)
Even though David’s rising popularity with the people of Israel meant he could likely supplant Jonathan as the next king (as King Saul feared), Jonathan’s friendship with David was undiminished. He truly loved David as he loved himself and went to great lengths to protect David from his father’s jealousy and warn him when he was in danger.
The greatest example of love in the Bible is the love of God for us. The Creator of the universe loves each of us personally and intimately. Even when we run away from God, He loves us anyway. Even when we sin against God, He loves us and wants to restore relationship with us.
98. Genesis 24:66-67 “Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.”
99. 1 Samuel 18:3 “And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.”
100. Ruth 1:16-17 “But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.”
101. Genesis 29:20 “So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.”

Conclusion
The all-encompassing love of Jesus is beautifully expressed in the old hymn by William Rees, which drove the Welsh revival of 1904-1905:
“Here is love, vast as the ocean, loving-kindness as the flood,
When the Prince of Life, our Ransom shed for us His precious blood.
Who His love will not remember? Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten throughout heaven’s eternal days.
On the mount of crucifixion fountains opened deep and wide;
Through the floodgates of God’s mercy flowed a vast and gracious tide.
